The itinerary will take us outside the walls of the town of Massafra, for a visit to the rock crypts of Sant'Angelo in Torella and San Simeone in Famosa.
The first was probably part of an ancient monastery and was open for worship until the early fourteenth century. Inside it is possible to appreciate the Byzantine San Michele Arcangelo and a Madonna with Child, closer to the Renaissance and to local aesthetic canons.
The Crypt of San Simeone in Famosa, which runs along the ravine of San Lorenzo, dates back to the 10th century. Inside, as well as the remains of frescoes depicting scenes from the Old Testament, there is a tomb built into the wall and aChrist Pantocratorbetween the Virgin and Saint John the Baptist.
