At sunset, equipped with torches, lanterns or headlamps, expert guides will lead you to discover the medieval rock village of Santa Marina, second only to the Sassi of Matera, "enlightening" you on the historical, artistic, archaeological, social and material aspects of the culture of living in caves in Massafra, Thebaid of Italy.
Among the material aspects that define the territorial identity of "Puglia", and in particular of the tourist area of Magna Graecia, Murgia and Gravine, there is undoubtedly that of "cave life", which is found in the rocky habitat that characterizes the Taranto Ionian arch at its maximum expression. Here, as in the neighboring territories, landscape and lifestyle are in fact marked by the same historical and human events that link the life of the Apulian populations, from prehistory to the modern age. Without knowing this cultural background of composite presences and articulated and different mental models, one cannot understand the urban development of the main agglomerations that arise in continuity with the terraces of the ravines, the blades and the "ravines". A homogeneous area among the most significant in Puglia, characterized by the phenomenon of the excavation of cave reservoirs and structured by various transmigrations and demic currents, first of all the Byzantine one, which in the early Middle Ages found an easier insertion into the cultural humus of the phase Magna Graecia – of which Taranto constitutes the most significant episode – which had permeated social structures and institutions in previous centuries.
