19 Oct “Massafra in the Middle Ages on the Night of the Masciari”
On October 31st, this year too, after the extraordinary public success of last year's event, the Rione degli Ostinati of Massafra will be the scene of a living history that, thanks to the initiative conceived by the Pro Loco city of Massafra as part of the 2023 Notice for the provision of contributions to the Pro Loco tourist associations", entitled "Massa_Afra: Rock paradises between Masciari and the taste of traditions", will make it possible to learn in an engaging and participatory way the history and popular traditions of the land of the "Masciari".
In fact, since the Middle Ages, chronicles have handed down legends of magicians, holy men, healers and esoteric practices carried out by making love, happiness or money potions thanks to the very rich variety of medicinal herbs present in the ravines of the Madonna della Scala.
And there are many places of memory that intertwine the material cultural heritage of the Thebaid with the immaterial one, and with magic: from the "pharmacy" of the Magician Greguro and his daughter Margherita, accused of witchcraft by the villagers and then saved by the Abbot Anselmo, to the devil's cave, from the witch's horn, to the Gypsies' Bridge.
Up to the Rione degli Ostinati, where for one evening, starting at 7.30 pm, through an itinerary that winds from Lungovalle Niccolò Andria, Piazza Risorgimento to Piazzetta SS. Medici, magicians, actors, hunchbacks, stilt walkers, fortune tellers, jugglers and falconers, and many other figures will bring Massafra back to life in the Middle Ages, accompanying visitors on a very special journey inspired by the most typical Apulian traditions and nourished by myth and legends.
And for those who also want to feed on the taste wisely handed down by popular gastronomy, there is the street food offered by the restaurateurs of the district, who for one evening will transform their businesses into inns.
To discover all the events scheduled, all you have to do is let yourself be led by the hand by Greguro, Margherita and the members of the Pro Loco, through the surroundings and courtyards of the historic center of Massafra, to discover a Puglia and a Massafra as you have never seen it.
The territorial promotion initiative enjoys the support of the Puglia Region - Tourism and Internationalization Section, the Urban District of Commerce of the Municipality of Massafra, the Patronage of the Municipality of Massafra - Department of Culture, Tourism and Entertainment, of Unpli Puglia as well as the collaboration of the Association La Durlindana.
