Massafra in the Middle Ages on the Night of the Masciari

The sixth edition of "Massafra in the Middle Ages on the Night of the Masciari" will kick off on Monday, October 31st, the event organized by the Pro Loco city of Massafra, as part of the project "Bites and sips history, culture, tradition and taste" winner of the initiative promoted by the Puglia Region relating to the 2022 Notice for the provision of contributions to Pro Loco tourist associations.
On October 31st, the Rione degli Ostinati in Massafra will host a living history event. This initiative, conceived by the Pro Loco of Massafra, will offer an engaging and participatory experience of the history and folk traditions of the land of the "Masciari." Since the Middle Ages, chronicles have chronicled legends of magicians, holy men, healers, and esoteric practices performed by concocting love, happiness, or money potions using the rich variety of medicinal herbs found in the ravines of the Madonna della Scala. Many sites of memory intertwine the material and immaterial cultural heritage of the Thebaid, including magic: from the "pharmacy" of the Magician Greguro and his daughter Margherita, accused of witchcraft by the villagers and later saved by Abbot Anselmo, to the Devil's Cave, the Witch's Horn, and the Gypsy Bridge. Up to the Rione degli Ostinati, where for one night, starting at 7:00 PM, along a route that winds from Piazza Risorgimento to Piazzetta SS. Medici, magicians, actors, hunchbacks, jugglers, fortune tellers, falconers, and many other performers will bring Massafra back to the Middle Ages, accompanying visitors on a unique journey inspired by the most typical Apulian traditions and nourished by myth and legend. And for those who also want to indulge in the "taste" expertly passed down through popular gastronomy, there's street food offered by the neighborhood's restaurateurs, who will transform their businesses into inns for one night. To discover all the scheduled events, all you have to do is let Greguro, Margherita, and the members of the Pro Loco guide you through the neighborhoods and courtyards of Massafra's historic center, discovering a Puglia like you've never seen it before.
This local promotion initiative is sponsored by the Puglia Region and the Municipality of Massafra, as well as in collaboration with the La Durlindana Association and Borgo Santi Medici. The Pro Loco's goal is to promote the Massafra area by combining "traditions, knowledge, and flavors," with a view to promoting and enhancing the area and initiating virtuous processes and fostering a sense of belonging and collaboration among local associations.
Good Massafra❤
